Friday was one of those days. Those days where you’re running a little late. One of those days you have your slacks, belt, but you get stuck at the sweater, so you start over. One of those days you decide to just default to jeans. Holey jeans, because it’s Friday. Holey jeans, because I can. I can, because I work in an art studio. And because it works, if I slip into heels. & it works for my seniors, so why not me!?

I have a thing for the earthy-urban vibe! You know, the non-conformists you find on the city streets of Seattle & Portland in wool shirts & Goodwill jeans: a total Pacific Northwest feel. My sister tried to get me on the style-track to hyppie-ness when she gave me a distressed-leather purse and natural-fiber, Seattle-brand skirt for my birthday. The look feels slightly transplanted on the streets of Hermiston, but it’s taking root.

When I spotted Shelby & Alisha taking senior pictures on Main Street in Hermiston, I was struck by their style: flannel shirts, skinny jeans, leather moccasins, headband & shoulder bag. They looked like they had been transplanted straight from a profile on Urban Weeds: a Portland street fashion blog by photographer, Lisa Warninger. So, I asked the girls if I could shoot them. They obliged. We laughed lots & came away with this fotoNovella:

Tyler is a great example of why I love my small town. I don’t know everyone, but I inevitably know someone everywhere I go. I’ve been running into Tyler & his family for years. It all started with horse 4-H when I gave Tyler horse riding lessons. Then, last year Tyler was the ‘good kid’ in my otherwise ‘testy’ shop class when I substitute taught. ‘Good kid’ right, Tyler? Of course, you wouldn’t have taken part in the ninja throwing stars project, right?!

The next time I saw Tyler was at McDonalds. I decided to take my number #6 & iced hazelnut latte ‘for here’. Now, why is it if I had gone to a unique eatery like the Farmer’s Kitchen and enjoyed my chicken sandwich & expresso in the corner, I’d have felt like an intellectual, but in this case I sat alone, hoarding my fries, like a fat girl at the far table in the high school cafeteria. Enter: high school students. As I substitute taught last year & it’s small-town Hermiston, I know all of them, including Tyler. So we chat. Or I chat to them across three tables because I’m sooo beyond fat-girl-in-the-corner behavior and am working on thinks-she’s-cool-substitute-teacher behavior. I hear about the classes Tyler & his buddies are taking. Included in the list were english, weight lifting, economics, & ninja throwing star classes.

French fries & fat-girl feelings aside, running into people I know rocks! & capturing the fotoNovella of a senior I run into at McDonalds does too: meet Tyler!

I drive country roads like it’s a hobby. Don’t judge. I think you have to live in Eastern Oregon to understand we don’t have a lot of entertainment options. Let’s see: people-watching at Wal*mart? cat-fishing in the dark? rat-stomping in the cornfield? Nope. NO. No thank you. So, along with taking-up collecting boots, brass door knobs, & barn doors (yes, really): I drive. I drive roads like Despain Gultch, Stage Gultch & Missouri Gultch to Pendleton. I take Feedville to Hermiston, Buttercreek to Echo, Coldspring to Holdman & the Oregon Trail to the Columbia, where I ford a river and my oxen drowns. Yeah. Eastern Oregon, my friends!

I could take the freeway and get there faster, but then I’d miss the deer, barns, fences, silos, fields, farmers: all of which I’ve stopped in the middle of a country road to capture with my camera, on one drive or another this summer. You know how I love me a weathered farmer foto! Well, Kayla’s hotter than any farmer I’ve taken pictures of, but as President of the Hermiston FFA Chapter, our country-road fotoshoot fit her perfectly.

& so with a little John Denver: Country roads, take me home to the place I belong…
